In late July 2011, the United Nations declared the ongoing famine the worst in 20 years. Some 11.5 million people have been affected by drought in the region. The worst drought in 60 years has left more than 10 million people in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya at risk of severe food and water shortages.
